About us

markotte sells leather goods: wallets, bags, belts, watch straps and the small covers and cases that protect what you carry. Everything in the range is cut from full-grain leather — the top layer of the hide, with its grain, pores and marks left exactly as they grew.

We chose full-grain because it is the only grade that improves with use. Lesser leathers are sanded, coated or embossed to look perfect on day one, and then peel, crack or stay exactly as dull as the day they were made. Full-grain does the opposite: it starts firm and a little matte, then darkens where your hands touch it, polishes where it rubs, and moulds itself around the cards, tools and habits of your day. A wallet carried for a year looks better than a new one. That is the whole point.

How the pieces are made

Each piece is cut from a single hide thickness — no fillers, no split-leather backing, no fabric lining glued in to hide thin material. Seams are saddle-stitched: two threads crossed through every hole, so a single cut thread cannot unzip a seam. Edges are bevelled and burnished rather than painted, because paint flakes and burnished hide does not. Belt buckles are solid metal, held on by snaps, so they can be replaced and straps can be shortened instead of thrown away.

What we do not do

We do not use bonded leather, "genuine leather" composites or vinyl dressed up as hide. We do not line a bag in fabric to use less leather. And we do not chase a new collection every season — a wallet is not fashion. The range changes slowly, piece by piece, when a design earns its place.

Carrying, daily

Everything here is meant to be used hard and kept: scuffs can be buffed out with a thumb, scratches fade into the grain, and a conditioner a few times a year keeps the hide fed. If a piece ever stops feeling like the right thing in your hand, our 30-day return window is there — and the details are on the Shipping & Handling and Refund & Return Policy pages, in plain language.
